Is it still valid to send an actual mail to a company rather than sending an e-mail?

I feel a lot of times emails are just being thrown in the junk mail whereas if i sent an actual letter in, itll give that special touch.

what are your thoughts? is sending a letter and resume through the mail still valid?

thanks for your thoughts :)

Hi Chinaman:
Here in Las Vegas you must apply on line. Many compamies same rule. But you can supplement the on line as well. Many HR Dept's will not open email with attachments, unless specified. No matter what!
So I would do both and let them know in advance...

Many companies you have to complete the application forms on line and also carry out an assessment on line. No one bothers with normal mail anymore and it is in the same class as unsolicited brochures and offers that keep coming through the letterbox.
Have a good email and CV in PDF ready to send to future employers. The good CV and cover letter will catch the eye in HR.

Best regards

That's correct, and, if you are a chef. You need pictures etc... in a "normal" format. Also, a youtube VDO and website does help.

Thank you for the input.

The thing is, I'm trying to apply through corporate office. The only contact info on their website is an address, no email. So I am having trouble finding the receiving end.

The PDF suggestion is very useful thank you. I've always only been sending in Word files and not PDF formats.

Thanks for the input though, appreciate your help.

Cheers

Dear Chinaman,

Many corporate offices only hire General Managers and Financial Controllers direct, all other senior management is usually via the hotel.

Many corporate offices do have contacts hidden amongst their website for example Ritz Carlton, if you go to corporate.ritzcarlton you will find information on applying for jobs, and I am sure it is the same for other groups.

Sometimes it may be better for you to apply direct to the regional office of the area you want to work i.e. Dubai regional offices for the gulf etc.

By the way the reason I used PDF in the past was for security reasons, as word documents can be changed and does show spelling and grammatical errors whereas saving your word CV to PDF has a much better presentation.

Which reason are you looking for work as I can probably help you in regard to the Middle East.

Best regards

Dearest Chinaman,

Nobody is sending had copies these days, not even fax copies. It all goes via the net. Usually sites like IHG want you to log in and post / update your resume in accordance to their specifications, which I always refused. I will always try to search for the name of a key player, to whom the manager is supposed to report to, i.e. direct manager. This can be done by asking around, by calling their office, by searching the web. I would never want to be part of somebodies corporate data base, not me!

In catererglobal, always click on "Job contact details" and you will 90% of the time get an e-mail address of some sort. Look at their corporate website under "About Us" and learn from there how to navigate to find what you are looking for.

I agree with Chris that CVs should always be send in PDF format, unless requested otherwise. Sometimes headhunters especially want you to resend your CV in WORD format, so they can copy paste into their own format before presenting it to their client.

I would always send an introduction with Executive Summary first and offer to send the CV later and upon request. This serves as a teaser and will in many cases force the HR to reply you, asking for the CV details. This way you will get their name and details handy!

Good luck in the year of the Water Dragon Chinaman!

I think that Chris and Klaus from The Land of Tansmania have made quite a point!

Its a different approach and maybe a good one to take but I would make sure its directly addressed to someone specific that perhaps you already know. Just because the policy is for online applications only does not mean you have to abide many people get hired by using a direct and personal approach rather then simply filling out an eform and waiting.

True. But in Las Vegas all is on line. It's a test in a way. The only positions not requiring on-line apps are menial or private Mom and Pop companies. For me the only time you send a snail mail is to follow up and say thank you.
