Remember, it's promotion. Don’t be confused. Social media is one of the “4Ps” in the marketing mix. (The 4Ps are Product, Price, Promotion, Place.) Treat it like any other promotional tool in your marketing plan, such as trade shows or direct mail.
Stick to your company's marketing goal. Ask yourself what role you want social media to play in forming relationships and promoting your business. Set a time and cost investment limit and stick to it.
Pick one platform. You can’t do it all, nor would you want to. Use the social media tool that personally feels most comfortable. Do you like to talk in shorter (Twitter) or longer (Facebook) conversations? Do you like to express yourself with pictures (Facebook and Pinterest)?
