Hotel Industry News In Brief
Some current conversation starters...
A recent survey carried out by leading holiday homes rental website pureholidayhomes.com revealed that 36% of European travellers stated a self catered break would be their preferred type of holiday, with 48% choosing a hotel.
When compared with the overall outlook of the European travel market, a clear need for the continued expansion of the self catered sector is evident. In a summary of the 2011 travel market, PhoCus Wright report that across Europe the hotel sector was worth 76.6 billion euros, when compared with the property rental sector at just 19.6 billion euros. At a time of financial uncertainty, self catered holidays have soared in popularity as holidaymakers prefer the incredible value for money available when choosing a rental property over a hotel, with pureholidayhomes.com predicting that booking a self catered villa could save up to 60% on your holiday costs when compared with a similarly classed hotel. A large majority of respondents also felt booking a self catered break presented a more authentic experience of a destination. Sean Collins, CEO of pureholidayhomes.com, comments: "I think the way the internet is expanding, with the growth of search and social media, saving time by booking with tour operators and hotel agents is not as much of a priority and holidaymakers are happy to book independently. As a result people are spending their time focusing on cost saving and there is no doubt booking a self catered holiday provides far better value for money for a family than a hotel. In addition to this, booking a rental property direct from the owner can save even more than traditional commission booking websites and travellers prefer the safety and security of handling all of the holiday elements themselves."
Citing unnamed sources, The Sunday Times reported on Sunday that sovereign wealth funds Qatar Investment Authority and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority are bidding for a portfolio of 42 Marriott-branded hotels in the U.K.
The sale of the portfolio, owned by Fawkes Holding, a subsidiary of Professional Ventures Corp. has been the subject of much speculation in the financial press. MINA Holdings, Freeport, Bahamas, announced it was set to buy the properties in February, but a deal did not materialize.
Nothing seems to stop the irresistible growth in arrivals on Bali Island. Indonesia's most popular destination continued its growth over the first five months of 2012, reaching a new record of 1.13 million tourists, up by 9.71% over the same five months in 2011.
If the current growth rate is maintained, Bali is likely to finish the year with over three million foreign visitors, an absolute record in the island's tourism history. The whole Indonesia received during the first five months, 3.18 million foreign visitors, representing a growth of 8.81% over 2011. Bali continues to represent over 35% of all arrivals, far ahead of Jakarta which represent only 26.7% of all foreign arrivals to the Archipelago. Growth in Bali is sustained by the Australian market, which continues to represent the largest share of travellers to the Island of the Gods. Australians are up by 9.71% for the first five months with 292,800 arrivals. According to the website Bali Discovery, Australia could reach a total of over 860,000 visitors by the end of the year. China is now becoming Bali's second largest market representing more than twice the total number of Japanese coming to the Island. From January to May 2012, the total number of Chinese reached 143,345 visitors, an increase of almost 65% over the same period of 2011.
