German travelers make up the largest proportion of Europeans in 9 of the 12 destinations on the list. According to data generated from our 20 million unique visitors monthly, trivago reports:
Germans outnumber other European nationalities in all but three cities
German travelers make up the largest proportion of Europeans in 9 of the 12 destinations on the list. According to The World Bank, Germany is the European country with the most international departures, followed by the UK. It is therefore of little surprise that the top destinations in the US are most heavily represented by German and British vacation-goers. Germans dramatically outnumber other European nationalities in cities Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Honolulu, and Key West-suggesting a trending affinity towards California and warm-weather beach destinations.
British outnumber Germans in Orlando, Chicago, Boston
Britons make up the majority (54%) of all Europeans visiting Orlando this summer, while Germans account for only 16%, which suggests that Brits have a stronger attraction to Disney World than their European neighbors. In Boston, travelers from the UK have a much stronger representation (36%) than the Germans (21%), which is unsurprising in light of the deep historical connection the city has to Great Britain. UK travelers outnumber Germans in Chicago as well (27% v. 24%). The Irish have the strongest relative presence in cities most popular with their British neighbors (Orlando, Boston, and Chicago).
French travelers prefer parties and beaches, Italians head to big cities
New York City draws considerably more Italian tourists (13%) than French (11%) this summer. Perhaps this has something to do with New York's strong Italian roots. Italians also outnumbered the French in San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, Chicago, and Washington D.C. However, trivago reports a stronger French presence than Italian presence in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami Beach, Orlando, Honolulu, and Key West. Perhaps do the French like to party and lay by the beach more than the Italians? Miami was the only US destination examined in which the French (18%) outnumbered British tourists (15%).
Dutch have high relative representation in Florida
Travelers from the Netherlands made it in the top five list of European nationalities only in destinations in the state of Florida -and Key West (at 6%) and Orlando (at 4%).
Las Vegas attracts German and British
Although Las Vegas is the first or second most popular destination for all European nationalities traveling to the US this summer, it is also the city that sees the weakest distribution of visitors among nationalities, where German nationals make up for 35% of European visitors, followed by British partygoers at 32%. The next largest group was the French (at 8%).
