Swire Group, the Asia-focused conglomerate that is one of Britain's oldest trading firms in Hong Kong, plans to assemble a European hotel empire worth hundreds of millions of pounds.
The company, which has interests in industries including aviation, beverages and shipping, is to acquire boutique hotel properties across the continent and is actively looking at prospective deals, according to insiders.
Swire Properties, the group's real estate arm, is understood to be keen to establish a portfolio of as many as 100 hotels over the next few years.
The UK is expected to comprise a significant proportion of the total. Swire's only existing hotel assets in Europe are a trio of British properties operating under the name Alias Hotels. The three sites are in Brighton, Cheltenham and Exeter.
