When Uganda was chosen in 2005 as the host for Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) in 2007, it seemed so far away. Now the countdown for Chogm is only ten weeks without counting November when the main activities take place.
In all, the main activities start with various programmes on November 14 and these will go on until the Heads of Government meeting, which starts on November 23. The committees are working around the clock to ensure that all is in place in good time.
Roads are being reconstructed, streetlights put in place, cameras being installed on the streets, beautification of the city and above all the Chogm venues are being constructed or renovated. On accommodation, the government entered a joint venture with Speke Group of Companies to construct a new hotel of sixty suites at Munyonyo.
Work is progressing well and when the hotel is finished it will be one of its kind in Africa. Sixty suites each with state of the art furniture, design and fittings, with each suite having a living room, dining room and a kitchenette. You need to go on site and see what I am writing about.
The hotel will have a man-made lake, a modern lounge and restaurants, among others. Just wait for the opening and you will be amazed. Uganda will make a name in Africa as a conference destination. The Chogm Secretariat just advised on the best venue we should be proud of.
I have read in the papers some people questioning the rationale of government investing $8 million in this project where government has 25% shares. This means that the entire project at Munyonyo will cost $32 million. The negative criticisms were that the hotel would cost less and as a result government’s equity was under-valued.
