European hotel managers rank Americans as worst dressed tourists. The ugly American? Mais non, said 1,500 European hotel managers when asked to rank tourists' traits by nationality. American visitors, they said, are the most generous, most interested in local cuisine and most willing to adopt the local language. On the downside, they said, we're the worst dressed. The managers, polled online by the German branch of Expedia.com, ranked Americans No. 2 as "overall best travelers," next to the Japanese. The worst travelers, they said, are the French. Concept Hospitality Ltd, which ownes the Orchid brand of hotels, has signed management contracts in China and South Africa as it seeks to expand operations overseas. The group has signed management contracts for two hotel groups - one each in China and South Africa, reports quoting company sources said.Mumbai-based Concept Hospitality Ltd (CHL) expects the agreements to become operational in the next two years. CHL manages the Uppals Orchid ecotel hotel chain in India with the Uppal Group. The two new properties will together add about 1,000 rooms to its portfolio. The 159-room Gold Reef hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa would also have one Indian speciality restaurant besides other five-star facilities. CHL will manage two projects in China with a total room strength of around 850, located in Haikou Island and at the cultural and heritage site of China-Lijiang. The company managed to win the contracts as it was certified by HVS Eco Services to facilitate growth of Ecotels - the hallmark of environmentally-sensitive hotels. CHL's existing four properties - Hotel Rodas and Lotus Suites in Mumbai, Uppal's Orchid in New Delhi and Jungle Lodges Resorts in Bangalore - have all received the Ecotel certification. The company, meanwhile, has signed management contracts for new hotels coming up in Jaipur, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kollam and Himachal Pradesh. On behalf of Kimpton Group Holding LLC, Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels has arranged the sale of the 195-room Hotel Palomar, located at 4th and Market Streets, in downtown San Francisco, California. The property was sold to Griffin Capital, a Los Angeles-headquartered, privately-owned real estate investment company, who has had tremendous success with its commercial investment products targeted at individual investors seeking fractional 1031 opportunities, or TICs. While the Palomar is Griffin's first acquisition of a hotel, it is the fifth recent acquisition in the Bay Area. The Hotel Palomar's residential-style lobby reflects the overall theme of the hotel, "Art in Motion," boasting a wood parquet floor modeled after MC Escher's famous drawings. The hotel's 195 guestrooms reflect a modern elegance and have recently undergone a substantial soft goods renovation to allow the property to further penetrate its competitive supply. One of the hotel's prized attributes is the Fifth Floor, the Hotel Palomar's Michelin rated fine-dining restaurant. This signature restaurant is scheduled for a substantial renovation that will enhance the hotel's position as the premier, luxury boutique hotel in the market.

Shangri-La Hotel, The Marina, Cairns was voted winner of the "Water-wise Garden" award at the Cairns City Council Garden Awards ceremony on Saturday, 11 August, 2007. Chris Young, the hotel's gardener of fourteen years' received the plaque and trophy from Councillor Margaret Cochrane on Saturday evening. The new award takes into consideration the amount of lawn, and the efficiency of the sprinkler system and mulching, all of which are daily considerations for Mr Young. "Best horticultural practice demands we use water more efficiently. It is an honour for the hotel to have been recognised as being a water-wise establishment" Mr Young said. Cushman & Wakefield Sonnenblick Goldman announced today it has arranged the $92.1 million sale of the Bethesda Marriott in Bethesda, Md. on behalf of Westbrook Partners and Northview Hotel Group. The AAA four-diamond, Mobil four-star, 407-room hotel is located on 12-acres and is just minutes from downtown Bethesda and 10 miles from Washington, D.C. Westbrook Partners and Northview Hotel Group recently completed a $13.5 million capital improvement program, which included the creation of a dynamic restaurant/lounge, renovating the Grand Ballroom and adjacent meeting rooms; revamping the fitness center with new state-of-the-art equipment; and replacing the hotel guestroom soft goods.
