Daniel Edward Craig draws from many years in the hotel industry to deliver a rollicking murder mystery set in a luxurious New York hotel: Murder at the Universe.
Daniel Edward Craig, general manager of the stylish boutique Opus Hotel Vancouver, releases his first novel this September. Craig, who embarked on his hotel career in Toronto in 1987 and has since worked for ten luxury hotels, has been a part of the team at Opus since its inception in 2002. Under his direction, Opus has garnered its international reputation for exemplary service, distinctive design and cutting edge marketing.
Craig's debut novel, Murder at the Universe, is to be published by Midnight Ink Books in the US and Canada. Readers are introduced to New York's fictional Universe Hotel, the opulent setting for the mysterious death of the hotel's beloved owner, Willard Godfrey. When it becomes apparent that Godfrey was murdered and his colleagues are suspect, Trevor Lambert, the hotel's director of rooms, finds himself playing the role of reluctant sleuth as he struggles to appease harried employees, pampered guests, and militant protestors. Suspense and intrigue follow, driven by a cast of colourful characters and hilarious behind-the-scenes antics.
A recent review in Publishers Weekly called the novel "a sparkling debut" and "an erudite whodunit." "I have drawn inspiration from many of the weird and wonderful people I have met in my career and the unique and often bizarre situations I have encountered," says Craig. "But rest assured, this book is pure fiction." Midnight Ink has contracted to publish two sequels. The second installment in the Five-Star Mystery Series, Murder at Hotel Cinema, is due to hit bookshelves in June 2008. The novel will be offered for sale in all Opus guestrooms and signed by the author upon request.
Craig also continues to add installments to his ever popular General Manager's Blog (www.opushotel.com/blog), which provides an entertaining insider's look at the challenges and rewards of running the swanky Yaletown boutique hotel. Lately, he has been dividing his time between Vancouver and Montreal, where he is acting general manager of the newly-branded Opus Montreal.
