Following the recent TV expose by Channel 9's "A Current Affair", where spy cameras were placed into sponge bags and left in Hotel bathrooms across Australia to film unsuspecting Room Attendants washing the hotel glasses, the Professional Housekeepers Association of NSW decided to conduct a series of independent tests on bathroom glass cleaning procedures.
Dirty glasses were taken from 5 hotels in Sydney and tested for micro-organisms. The glasses were then each contaminated with typical micro-organisms including yeast and mould. The glasses were then cleaned under controlled conditions using the 5 most commonly used methods of bathroom glass cleaning procedures.
These procedures included; washing in a dishwasher, using a microfibre cloth, 2 methods of dishwashing liquid in the bathroom sink and the use of Microclean in the bathroom sink. Contaminated glasses were also tested using just hot and cold water only.
The conclusion of the test results (conducted by EML - Consulting Chemist and Microbiologists) was that hot and cold water alone did not remove all the micro-organisms satisfactorily from the glasses however all other 5 cleaning methods were effective in the removal of typical micro-organisms to below an acceptable level.
President of PHAN, Ms Maureen Jolowicz said " The housekeeping fraternity can now breath a sigh of relief. This independent analysis has shown that generally the hotels standard operating procedures are effective in ensuring the glasses are cleaned to an acceptable level. The issue for us all as housekeeping professionals is to ensure that after the initial training, team members do comply with the SOP's"
