A third of Australians have had their holiday plans affected by the global economic crisis, according to a national survey on consumer sentiment.
Of those who said they were affected, more than 12 per cent said they had to cancel their holiday because of the credit crunch.
The realholidays.com.au survey revealed escaping on a summer holiday ranked next highest on the priority list in terms of disposable luxury items leading up to Christmas, after paying for the core essentials such as the mortgage, rent, credit cards or groceries.
While the survey indicated that many Australians realise they have to tighten their purse strings, a surprising 67 per cent of respondents said they were not deterred by the impact of the global economic crisis and its effects on their immediate holiday plans.
Jamie Pride, spokesperson for realholidays.com.au believes the survey paints an optimistic picture of Australians, their passion for domestic travel and spending quality time with family and friends.
"Although holidaymakers are becoming more cautious about where they spend their money, insights from the realholidays.com.au survey indicated people will still travel locally, but may be inclined to take shorter breaks, or simply look at a broader range of accommodation options to suit their budget," he said.
"Forty six per cent of holidaymakers indicated they would love to holiday on the Sunshine Coast, with Noosa voted as the most popular destination," said Jamie.
To tie in with the survey, realholidays.com.au today launched an exciting national competition offering four lucky Australians the opportunity to win a real holiday escape to spend a week at one of four luxurious holiday destinations that have been hand picked from the realholidays.com.au website, together with $2,000 spending money for each winner.
Properties are located on the NSW Central Coast - Avoca, Queensland's Sunshine Coast - Noosa, Victoria's Great Ocean Road - Lorne and Byron Bay, with one winner per location.
The competition will run until 16 November 2008. To enter the competition visit: realholidays.com.au/winarealescape
