The Universal Forum of Cultures Barcelona 2004 successfully held a Dialogue on "Tourism, Cultural Diversity and Sustainable Development"
, which took place on 14-16 July.
The Dialogue was organized by the Instituto de Turismo Responsable (Institute for Responsible Tourism) with the active participation of the World Tourism Organization, which collaborated in its preparation and in the selection of speakers.
The Dialogue was opened by Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abd al-Aziz al-Saud, President of the Supreme Commission for Tourism of Saudi Arabia and the President of the Dialogue. Among the speakers at the opening ceremony were the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization, Mr. Francesco Frangialli, and the Mayor of Barcelona and President of the Forum, Mr. Joan Clos.
Hundreds of tourism professionals from over 50 countries participated in the Dialogue, which was also attended by the Ministers of Tourism of Ecuador, Ethiopia, and Mexico, the Minister of Economy, Growth and Competitiveness of Cape Verde, and the Deputy Minister of Tourism of Indonesia. Among the speakers and participants were numerous entrepreneurs,local authorities and representatives of NGOs and the academic sector.
The closing ceremony of the Dialogue was presided by Mr. Eugenio Yunis, Head of the Sustainable Development of Tourism Department of the World Tourism Organization. Speakers included the Director-General of Tourism of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Ms. Isabel Galobardes, and the President of the Spanish National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, Mr. Luis Ramallo Massanet.
After extensive debate and numerous discussion workshops, the Declaration on Tourism, Cultural Diversity and Sustainable Development, whose text is attached, was adopted.
