Cleaning Industry Leadership Standard under development
IEHA has announced the development of the Cleaning Industry Leadership Standard (CILS) (pronounced "Sils") containing specifications and standards for leadership in the cleaning industry.
"Great leadership is the driving force that enables efficient management," notes Beth B. Risinger, Executive Director and CEO of IEHA. "A fundamental rationale for IEHA establishing this CILS program is that the program will stimulate members of the IEHA to lead the cleaning industry toward advances in healthier approaches and methods that are economical, environmentally safe, and can be applied throughout the world."
CILS recognition will be based on developing and validating the leadership that produces a healthier environment through optimized facility operations and housekeeping functions.
The proposed CILS standard provides quality criteria for leadership development and identification of leaders for cleaning, maintenance, housekeeping, groundskeeping, safety and/or indoor environmental programs in commercial, industrial or institutional facilities.
The proposed IEHA-CILS program will establish a leadership standard certification program that starts from the understanding that "leadership" and "management" of personnel and of performance are not the same and require different skills. The CILS certifiable standard for leadership in the cleaning industry will complement the existing ISSA-CIMS standard for management.
According to Dr. David Mudarri, former EPA Senior Scientist and leading facilities consultant, "The certification process is a good vehicle for providing leverage to the cleaning sector identifying cleaning-related standards that can be marketed to other groups, governments, and entities promulgating guidelines and recommendations, and that these may in turn recommend or require that, for example, IEHA CILS certification be used to help meet their own facility standards and guidelines. For standards to be accepted, it is important that they be developed by a transparent and inclusive process that involves multiple interested stakeholders who either help develop, or actively comment and perhaps vote."
For this reason, IEHA is forming a CILS Consensus Group for developing the CILS Standard.
Upon consensus, CILS will be defined by a CILS Standard 1.0 Document. This standard will then be elaborated upon in detail by IEHA's Professional Educational Credentialing Program (PECP) Leadership Modules in the new IEHA Leadership for Effect Series.
When fully developed, the CILS program will be a voluntary standard, developed and marketed by the IEHA.

Air China commences Beijing - Hawaii service
Air China has launched a new service, CA837/8, which is the first nonstop air link between Beijing and Hawaii. It's operated three times a week on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday with widebody A330-200. The outbound flight departs from Beijing at 1:30 Beijing time and arrives in Hawaii at 16:30 local time. The return flight takes off from Hawaii at 22:00 local time and arrives in Beijing at 5:20 Beijing time on the third day.
In recent years, China's market demand for travel to Hawaii has been growing rapidly. Statistics show that in 2012 Chinese traveler numbers increased by 64 percent year-on-year. The new route will meet the surging demand for air services of Chinese travelers to Hawaii, sparing the travelers residing in areas around Beijing the trouble of having to transfer in Shanghai, and offer an additional transfer option to travelers from Europe and the Middle East bound for Hawaii.
In addition to the Beijing - Hawaii nonstop service, other new international services that Air China will soon introduce include Beijing-Vienna-Barcelona and Shanghai-Munich. These new services will further establish the carrier's global route network and make it easier for passengers in China and neighboring countries to travel to other parts of the world via Beijing.
AccesRail signs agreement with Trenitalia
AccesRail, a specialist in air-rail intermodal solutions, has signed an agreement with Trenitalia. This partnership utilizes AccesRail's expertise to enable Trenitalia to make its train tickets available on the sales platforms of all major airlines of the world.
To the travel agent, this means that they can now book air and rail segments in the airline primary screen display of all important GDSs. And to the customer this means that they can now travel with air and rail segments on the same itinerary. For example, passengers landing in Rome will already have their Trenitalia ticket in-hand and can board the train en route to their chosen destination, such as Florence or Naples.
Trenitalia's Le Frecce trains are known for transporting passengers throughout Italy in speed and comfort. The deal between AccesRail and Trenitalia utilizes this network to open up new opportunities for the national tourism industry. Transporting passengers onward to all the potential cities served by Le Frecce makes it possible for a new array of end destinations for international and intercontinental travel. This, in turn, meets the market demand to broaden the range of tourist destinations, while making door to door service possible and more seamless.
