New technology and old worries are edging the systems closer to extinction. Perhaps at no time will that be more apparent than at next week's International Hotel/Motel and Restaurant Show in New York, billed as the world's largest hotel industry event. "Technology moves in cycles, and the cycle may be turning away from magnetic systems," said Richard Siegel, who publishes the trade magazine Hospitality Upgrade. "There are a lot of new technologies that hotels are intrigued by."

There are many reasons why people find themselves in the latter group: They can't get home in time, they can't afford to travel, their family drives them crazy, or, best of all, because instead of slaving over a hot turkey and putting up with irritating relatives, they can be staying at a wonderful resort where people fuss over them. Best of all, after a round of golf or a private massage, they can still spend quality time with their loved ones without having to cook or clean up after them. By Sophia Banay, Forbes.com

(The most recent average daily room rate was $221.62 for the first six months of the year, according to PKF Consulting.) So it would appear that there is a market for a well-located new hotel whose effective daily rate is in the range of $180 to $190. "These days, that is a relative bargain," said John A.
