The boutique hotel industry has finally come of age. Twenty-one years after it was invented by Ian Schrager, a nightclub entrepreneur, in New York, his business is going public. But the company he created, Morgans Hotel Group, will have to cope without him; he resigned as chief executive last June. It will be interesting to see if the group can retain its cutting edge, especially as the segment has become steadily more crowded.

The infamous "Hanoi Hilton," where Senator John McCain spent five and a half years during the Vietnam War, has been largely demolished. Only a small museum remains of the Hoa Lo prison, involuntary housing for 300 American pilots captured in the conflict. The Hilton Hanoi Opera, open since 1999, takes pains to not celebrate a connection to Hoa Lo, even if the hotel's Web site is hanoi.hilton.com. Tourists still drop in to ask if the prison was located there, or at least nearby — but none of the guests, the concierge assured during a recent stay, confuse the hotel with a prison.

There are inventions that people can all benefit from, and then there are inventions that have truly altered the course of history. In the former category, the automatic coffee maker, for example, is a wonderful device: ingenious and capable of brewing some fine java. But had it never existed, it would not have really mattered. The same might be said for the microwave oven, the hair dryer, laser keratotomy, REITs, the Xbox and the ATM machine. All of which are very nice, but we could have gotten along just fine without them. By Breckinridge Ely, Forbes.com

Valentine's Day may ostensibly be about love, but we all know it's really about commerce. It's a time when retailers and restaurants look for a little midwinter lift from lovers of all ages and sexes--and too many of us are too in love, cautious or guilty to have the sense to keep our credit cards in our pockets.
Yet as any Valentine's veteran can attest, you don't always get the best value for your money on cupid's big day. By

The past decade has seen exponential growth in luxury hotel spas and spa resorts, due mainly to significant customer demand, and the fact that margins on spa operations are among the largest in the hotel industry. So what explains this dramatic rise in customer demand? Although many reasons are often cited, many link the growth primarily to aging baby boomers, and the global growth in high net worth individuals, whose stress levels and need for self-actualisation have increased along with their net worth. By Robert Zimmer and Angela Clarke

Most companies we know of have a serious problem: Sales hates marketing, and marketing despises sales. Marketing is having great success generating leads and uncovering opportunity. But sales has no respect for what marketing accomplishes. They take leads grudgingly and when the leads turn into real opportunities they claim those opportunities were already on their radar. There seems to be an unbridgeable gulf between these teams—they have separate goals, separate cultures, and different fears and motivations.
