I just need time to develop mine and then I can close the deal.” Sorry GM’s but much of this thinking is a CON – a way of begging for more time to do what is expected of sales personnel – to sell more rooms by meeting goals and quotas. I eagerly began teaching it to all of my management staff as soon as I read the book. Just as I had requested, my managers started spending less time in their offices and more time out and about in our properties. I was seriously disappointed, however, when I saw little improvement in their effectiveness as managers. By Mark Hamister

John Portman made downtown hotels bold inside and out. His works include the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. There it was: an exhilarating, skylit expanse ringed by a cascade of ivy-festooned balconies, stacked tier upon tier for an extravagant 22 stories. Water trickled down from the glittery column of a 75-foot-tall fountain as pod-shaped glass elevators — trimmed in lights like dressing room mirrors — shot up toward a revolving rooftop restaurant. Even the floors, paved in fan-shaped mosaics of champagne-colored tiles, took on shades of the Yellow Brick Road. By Aric Chen, The New York Times
