Hilton is set to increase its presence in Ireland with two new, contemporary, full service properties - due to open in Limerick and Dublin Kilmainham early in 2007. Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels have reported that 55,000 luxury 4 and 5 star hotel rooms are expected to be completed in the next five years across the UAE. Dubai is leading the market with the confirmed development of more than half of all projects, followed closely by Abu Dhabi. There is no talking your way out of a mandatory $1-a-night telephone service charge at the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas. And when Dennis C. Tucker saw the surcharge on his bill recently, he did not even try. “I paid it,” said Mr. Tucker, a librarian from Modesto, Calif., who was in Las Vegas for a job interview. “But I don’t think I should have. I never picked up the phone, except to call room service.” Mandatory extras such as Excalibur’s phone fee, which covers the cost of unlimited local calls made from its rooms, are hardly new. For years, hotels have increasingly saddled their customers with nonnegotiable surcharges for everything from the use of an in-room safe to a general resort fee that pays for amenities that were once part of the room rate.

The number of stars that a hotel should have is very arbitary — except in China. In theory, there is always an official body which uses standard criteria for classifying hotels, but in many there is none. There have been attempts at unifying the classification system so that it becomes an internationally recognized and reliable standard but large differences still exist in the quality of the accommodation and the food within one category of hotel, sometimes even in the same country.

It’s a fact of life at most mid-scale and economy lodging properties that the front desk staff has to shoulder the responsibility for fielding the majority of reservations inquires. Yet even at full service and luxury hotels with a dedicated, on premise reservations staff backed up by a brand or third-party central reservations office, it seems inevitable that some calls still end up coming into the front desk. Even more inevitable is that these calls seem to come in at the most inopportune times, such as when the last three check-ins of the shift have all shown up at once, and when the mid-shift “extra” has just been sent home early since it was slow the whole shift so far. Visitors to Singapore this month can expect to pay more than they normally would as a result of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings being held here. The result included a €129m (£88m) capital gain on the sale of 68 hotels to Fonciere des Murs during the reporting period. Accor is accelerating its programme of hotel sales, with a further 535 to be put on the market by 2008, raising about €3.2bn. Over the past 18 months it has sold 261 hotels for more than €1.6bn, together with its stakes in Compass, Club Med and Carlson Wagonlit Travel.
