The Concierge profession has changed over the years, but never more so than in this new century. Before the advent of the internet and other amazing technological tools, hotel guests used to rely on the concierge at their destination to orient them to their new surroundings and connect them with tourist destinations, specialized shopping, gourmet restaurants, business services and serve a myriad other needs. Twenty years ago, when I first started as a concierge in Washington, DC, concierges developed huge Rolodexes of contacts locally, nationally and internationally, in order to answer every request for help. We kept huge libraries of resources at our desks - telephone books, atlases, five inch thick guides to hotels around the world, a dictionary, and flight schedules for national and international travel, restaurant guides, an incredible amount of brochures on local attractions and so on --- almost all of which are now replaced by computer access. From the age of information (think glorified electronic brochure) on the web to the world of snappy online transactions...we've now moved into the age of an experiential and social Internet, all great leaps in a relatively short space of time. Hotel eMarketers can lay claim to that cheery phrase too, as far as marketing and distributing hotel rooms on the internet is concerned, in spite of the traditional, people-centric nature of the industry. But despite the eMarketer code to boldly go where no other hotel marketers have gone before, very few venture into the fuzzy world of online marketing beyond rooms. By Jitendra Jain (JJ)

Despite widespread waves of Westernization that have infiltrated modern Japanese culture in the post-World War II era, the Japanese lodging industry has generally managed to keep its shroud of "foreignness" intact. While neighboring Asian countries have boasted a host of American and European lodging developments in the past twenty years, Japan has predominantly stuck with the Japanese lodging model of ryokans (traditional inns), Japanese-branded hotels, and its own invention of capsule hotels. However, recent changes in the second half of the present decade have indicated a changing tide of sentiment, as investors reassess their traditionally held views of Japanese real estate, seeing the potential of tapping into the third-largest economy in the world. The barriers to entry into this decidedly Eastern and Western hybrid market are beginning to erode, and Western hoteliers and investors alike are poised to benefit from this opportunity. By Emily U.
