Genuine star levels above 5-stars are not only possible, but also inevitable. Reaching them, however, requires one to abandon the traditional and well-entrenched ideas about how to create the guest experience. For this article, however, the focus will be on developing company-wide service standards. When building a strong service culture, it is important to have an inspiring vision and mission statement; but they only provide the context. Service standards, on the other hand, are the "nuts and bolts" of how you serve. They are the specific behaviors that you expect from yourself and your team in the ongoing journey to deliver engaging service. Standards such as "I attentively listen to others" and "I will always give a gracious goodbye", are clear and apply to everyone from the CEO to the housekeeper. By Bryan K. Williams

The climate of the current economic environment is forcing franchised hotels to become more involved in their brand's marketing strategies and seek untapped, low-cost Internet revenue opportunities. In the first half of 2008, occupancy rates in North America fell by 2.4%; in Europe by 1.3% and in the Asia Pacific by 3.9%, compared to the same period a year ago (Smith Travel Research).
