Ibis, the worldwide economy hotel brand of the Accor group, has opened its 800th hotel, the ibis Shanghai Lianyang in the People's Republic of China. It will be followed by the opening next month in Sydney of the ibis King Street Wharf. In 2007, ibis dramatically accelerated its worldwide development, with an objective of a network of 1100 hotels and 150,000 rooms in more than 70 countries by 2010. An analysis of so-called "nontraded REITs" finds that their structure puts long-term investors at a disadvantage, according to a new report about hotel real estate investment funds issued by Cornell's Center for Hospitality Research. The report, "Nontraded REITs: Considerations for Hotel Investors," finds that REITs - short for real estate investment trusts - can be an attractive buy-and-hold investment for income-oriented investors because of their high dividend payouts. The downward gravitational pull on the national economy resulting from extraordinary financial events currently playing out on Wall Street and in Washington has prompted PKF Hospitality Research (PKF-HR) to revise downward its hotel industry forecast for 2009 issued September 2008. The company is now expecting RevPAR and profit declines of 4.3 percent and 7.9 percent, respectively, for U.S. hoteliers in 2009, according to its updated forecast.

Yet research on work hours is limited, as most studies in this area have focused on the effects of employees' working in excess of a 40-hour work week. It's been called the tourism lobby's Holy Grail: a national advertising campaign paid for by the federal government. The "Travel Promotion Act" is currently before Congress. It would allow the federal government to charge travelers from certain overseas countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan, a $10 fee.
