Spermalie is located in the beautiful medieval town of Brugge, in the north of Belgium. The rich historical background of Bruges has proved over the years to be the perfect setting for the Spermalie School.

Originally established in 1952, it started out as a school for female hotel keepers. In its opening year the school started with only 6 students. During the following decades the school consistently expanded. In 1981, the option ‘tourism’ was added to the curriculum and in 1994 the school became ‘mixed’. In 2004 we started our section Hospitality. At present the school has 750 students and offers a complete six year-cycle of full time secondary education at both technical and vocational level. Students, aged between twelve and eighteen, have a choice between three disciplines: hotel, tourism and hospitality.
Furthermore there are three one-year specialisation classes: Hotel Management, Hotel Reception and Catering.

We have 4 boarding residences and around about 430 boarding students.
The boarders of the 6th and 7th form stay in real hotel rooms. The 54 rooms, mostly twin bedded, are all ‘en suite’, with shower or bath, hairdryer and toilet. All rooms have telephone, mini-bar and writing desk with computer connecting point.

Proudly we have provided for:

  • several banquets (over 50) at the Royal Palace, even on their trips abroad
  • the wedding reception of ‘Prince Filip and Mathilde’
  • the wedding banquet of ‘Prince Laurent and Claire’

In 1984 and 1999 we have had the honour of welcoming Queen Fabiola and Queen Paola in our school.

Our students take part in international exchanges and they have visited several wine districts during their educational excursions. On top, we have organised several short international gastronomical seminars for groups from the USA, Japan, Finland and South Korea.


Our school is a secondary school with 3 grades on technical or vocational level.
The first grade is an observation grade. This means that great weight is attached to basic general training in order to have the pupils come into contact with as many subjects as possible.

In the second grade (orientation) pupils chose one of the two levels: technical and vocational . In technical, the attention goes to general and technical-theoretic subjects. Practical courses are in the programme.
Vocational offers an extensive practical education, theory only basic courses, preparing for later employment in the industry.



In the option HOTEL students are introduced to the basics of cooking and serving at a very early stage. During their six years they learn about all aspects of gastronomy (e.g. oenology, pastry, food and beverage, management..). They also have an intensive language programme (Dutch, French, English and German). At the last stage of this training students have a one-year practical training in the public restaurant of the school (Hoeve Cortvriendt) and they have a six weeks work experience (abroad) in the 6th year.


The option TOURISM is a training in various abilities to work in the travel industry. The school has its own travel agency in which a complete range of equipment is at the students’ disposal (international travel guides, all new season tourism brochures, computers, internet connection, …). Communication skills are of major importance on the programme. The four modern languages are the major courses, together with typical and necessary courses such as history of art and culture, geography of tourism, tourism organisation, public relations. Practical training is organised both inside (travel agency) and outside the school (4 week training in the 6th form): in tourist offices, in a travel agency, with tour operators…


In the option HOSPITALITY students learn how to create a complete package for the guest(s): accommodation, catering, events, leisure time… In the hospitality branche the four modern languages are also of great importance! The complete hospitality package consists of aspects from tourism, hotel, economics, public relations, communication technology, arts and culture…
